So far small organizations or organizations without a fully developed food safety management system experienced difficulties in fulfilling the comprehensive requirements of IFS Food straightaway. Therefore, it was often not possible for companies to distribute their products in food retailing, as they could not provide the required proof of their quality capability in the form of an IFS, BRC or FSSC 22000 certificate.
The quality standard “IFS Global Markets Food” is a standardized evaluation programme for food safety for commercial products or private label products. It offers all food companies the opportunity to verify their food safety management system with more manageable efforts. The catalogue of requirements of “IFS Global Markets Food” is considerably simplified compared to the one of “IFS Food” and only comprises approximately one third of its requirements on the basic level. For the certification according to “IFS Food” organizations are gradually prepared based on a two-stage plan and they are accompanied, further developed and undergo assessments. By being included in the “IFS Global Markets Programme” also small companies have the opportunity to be listed in the IFS Database.
There are two types of requirements:
1. Basic level requirements
- Basic level food safety management system
specifications, including product release, retraceability, handling of food safety relevant incidents, control of non-compliant products, correction measures
- Good manufacturing practice
Personal hygiene, operational environment, cleaning and disinfection, monitoring of product contamination, pest control, water quality
- Control of food safety risks
Control of general as well as specific food safety risks, control of allergens
2. Middle level requirements
- Food safety management system
Corporate responsibility, general requirements regarding documentation, processes, complaint management, check of measuring and monitoring devices, product analysis, purchasing, approval and performance monitoring of suppliers as well as trainings
- Good manufacturing practice
Maintenance of facilities and equipment, social areas, waste disposal management, storage and transport
- HACCP and additional requirements
