ISO 14001:2026 Revision Published

The amendment to ISO 14001:2026 was recently published and introduces several improvements for users of the standard as well as for overall environmental performance.

The new ISO 14001:2026 represents a further development of the previous standard and places a stronger emphasis on the actual environmental performance of organizations. In addition to clearer requirements and a better structure, the standard particularly emphasizes the integration of issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and resource efficiency. Furthermore, the standard calls for a closer link between the environmental management system and corporate strategy, as well as a more active role for senior management. The goal is not only to optimize processes but also to ensure measurable progress and continuous improvement in the environmental sphere.

Important new deadlines

A three-year transition period applies to organizations from now on and ends in April 2029. From 1 November 2027 – 18 months after publication – audits may only be conducted according to ISO 14001:2026.

For organizations, this means that existing certificates must be transitioned to the new version no later than April 2029.

What is the goal of ISO 14001:2026?

The overarching goal of ISO 14001:2026 is to protect the environment by preventing or reducing adverse environmental impacts while also minimizing the potential negative effects of environmental conditions on the organization itself.

The standard supports organizations in fulfilling their compliance obligations and continuously improving their environmental performance. It encourages organizations to consider environmental aspects throughout the entire life cycle of products and services – from development and production to distribution, use and disposal.
