Why quality management matters now more than ever
An overview of the ISO 9001:2026 revision
The revised ISO 9001:2026 has just been published. It brings changes to risks and opportunities, as well as a stronger focus on sustainability and quality culture. What is new, and what do organizations need to do now? Quality Austria summarizes the key points of the revision.
The ISO 9001:2026 revision is here
Digitalization and AI, climate change, uncertainty and rising customer expectations: organizations are facing all of these at once. ISO 9001 is the most widely used management system standard in the world, and it is especially valuable in dealing with these multiple challenges. It provides stability and direction while reducing errors, increasing efficiency and driving continual improvement. The revised ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, followed by the German-language ÖNORM EN ISO 9001:2026 on 29 September 2026. The aim of the revised standard is to use a quality management system to secure performance, adaptability and business success.
What are the key changes in ISO 9001:2026?
- Quality culture and ethical behavior: This is a task for top management. Quality control is to evolve increasingly into a quality culture, and ethical behavior is to be actively promoted. Quality is most effective when it is firmly anchored in, and lived through, the company's strategy and culture.
- A clearer separation of risks and opportunities: The new edition treats risks and opportunities separately. Organizations that want to assure the quality of their products and services must evaluate their risks, but consider and develop their opportunities independently.
- Climate change and the context of the organization: The 2024 London Declaration requires every standard to address climate change, which brings changes to risk-based management. ISO 9001:2026 now permanently embeds this requirement in the text of the standard.
Key deadlines for organizations
A three-year transition period applies from the date of publication, meaning organizations have until September 2029 to make the switch. In addition, starting 18 months after the standard's publication, audits may only be conducted against the new standard. This applies equally to initial certifications and recertifications. From April 2028, audits (initial certifications) will therefore only be carried out against the new ISO 9001:2026. Certificates that are not transitioned in time will lose their validity!

Conclusion
Small changes can have a big impact. Organizations that engage with the new requirements now can plan adjustments systematically and make the transition more efficient. This not only gives them planning certainty, but also allows them to use the revision to establish a modern, future-oriented quality management system.
