IATF 16949 Rules 6 – Update
New edition of the IATF certification specifications
The new 6th edition of the IATF certification requirements came into force on January 1, 2025.
On March 31, 2024, the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) published the 6th edition of the "Rules for Achieving and Maintaining IATF Recognition", which replaced the previous 5th edition and all associated Sanctioned Interpretations (SIs) and Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A) at the beginning of the year. The requirements are binding for recognized certification bodies (such as Quality Austria Certification GmbH), but there are also certain requirements that should be understood by every organization certified according to IATF 16949.

Overview of the main changes:
- Audit cycle and deadlines: Surveillance audits must now be carried out annually, whereby a time window of ±3 months is permitted. Failure to comply with these deadlines may result in the certificate being withdrawn.
- Audit times: Adjustments have been made to the definition of audit times, including additional audit times and possible reductions. The time for audit planning is taken into account.
- Remote Locations: Support locations without a development function must be audited at least every 24 months (+/- 3 months).
- Site extensions: An extended manufacturing site (EMS) may be a maximum of 16 kilometers away and may not exceed a travel time of 60 minutes from the main site. In addition, the EMS and the main site must be part of the same legal entity and have a common management system.
- Group scheme: There must be a central office where the quality management function is located. This is responsible for defining, structuring and controlling the common quality management system.
- Relocation: In the event of a relocation, the certifier must be informed within 30 calendar days of the scope and timing of the relocation.
- Audit planning: The date must be firmly agreed 90 days before the planned audit date. Detailed information on audit planning must be provided at least 30 days before the audit so that the audit plan can be submitted up to 14 days before the audit.
- Deviation management: The deadline for submitting immediate measures in the event of major deviations is now 15 days
The IATF 16949 certification rules 6 are an important step forward in quality management in the automotive industry. They clearly structure audits and increase consistency and quality in the supply chain. Despite challenges, they offer the opportunity to improve processes and increase competitiveness.
