Quality Austria recognized as manufacturer certification body
Pick up speed with EN 15085
As of July 2023, Quality Austria has been recognized as a full ECWRV member (European Committee for Welding of Railway Vehicles) with regard to EN 15085 in the ECWRV Online Register (5-year registration). By this recognition we update our product range in the field of transport with EN 15085-2:2020 as well as ISO 3834-2:2021 and make an important contribution to the quality assurance of railway vehicles.

About ISO 15085
EN 15085 is a certification for organizations working on or with rail vehicles and/or parts. Basically, the new standard is divided into three certification levels: CL1, CL2 and CL3.
- CL1 is required for components or vehicles with high safety relevance,
- CL2 for components with medium safety relevance, and
- CL3 for components with low safety relevance.
In addition, the new EN 15085-2:2020 subdivides by type of activity:
- D stands for the construction activity (Design).
- P stands for the production activity (Production).
- S stands for service activity (Service) and includes purchase and sale of welded rail vehicle parts.
- M stands for maintenance activity (Maintenance)
Furthermore, the scope of application indicates the components for which the operation is approved:
- Parts of rail vehicles (e.g., interior equipment or braking systems) or
- entire rail vehicles.
In order to increase the transparency of the certificate issued, the scope is shown with the materials to be processed, the thickness and diameter ranges and the seam type.
The expansion of the Manufacturer Certification Body is another important step for Quality Austria to be present at the future topic "Green Mobility". With the increasing demand for public rail transport and far-reaching regulatory efforts to expand the rail network throughout Europe, EN 15085 will become even more important in the future. For this reason, certification bodies are playing an essential role in the expansion of train networks throughout Europe and are thus making a significant contribution to the greening of mobility and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Status quo and outlook
However, the current situation is also crucial for many organizations active in rail vehicle construction or considering possible expansion in these areas. This is because, as a result of European guidelines such as the Green Deal or zero emissions targets, investment in the rail network will increase rapidly in the coming years and decades. However, due to the growing relevance of the sector, regulatory requirements will also become increasingly important. Therefore, operations that already rely on the appropriate standards and certifications will triumph over those that have not yet addressed the issue.
