First worldwide ISO standard for Occupational Health and Safety enters into force

ISO 45001:2018 replaces OHSAS 18001

On March 12, 2018, the long-awaited ISO 45001:2018– the first worldwide and harmonized standard for Occupational Health and Safety – was published. As from this date, Quality Austria Trainings, Zertifizierungs und Begutachtungs GmbH offers audits acc. to the new ISO 45001.

After broad consent on the FDIS (Final Draft International Standard), the English version of ISO 45001:2018 was published on March 12, 2018. The British Standard OHSAS 18001 served as a precursor for the new harmonized Occupational Health and Safety Standard. Mr. Eckehard Bauer ( Executive Vice President Key Account and Business Development Risk and Safety, Security, Business Continuity, Transport) has represented Quality Austria in the International Standardization Committee of ISO: „ISO 45001 places greater emphases on protective and preventive aspects than the former OHSAS 18001. This approach is consistent with Austrian and European Legislation, where such issues, for example, workplace evaluation and the definition of boundaries as well as raising awareness for hazard elements, are already embodied in Laws“, explains Bauer on the benefits of the new Standard.

Easy integration into existing management systems

ISO 45001:2018 contains the High Level Structure and terminology similar to that already used in ISO 9001:2015 or ISO 14001:2015. Hence, the new Standard can easily be integrated into already existing management systems. Eckehard Bauer continues: „Organizations with an existing management system in accordance with ISO 9001 and 14001 will also conform to most of the requirements of the new Occupational Health and Safety Standard. ISO 45001 also provides support for the systematic implementation and integration of legal requirements placed by Occupational Health and Safety Legislation into existing processes.

Thus, legal certainty of the people responsible for occupational health and safety in companies can be increased while ensuring more effective protection of workers.”

Support in the transition to ISO 45001

For the transition to ISO 45001, information events and revision seminars have been developed, in which, among other topics, the transition from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001 and integration of the new Standard into existing management systems will be addressed. A checklist with a comparison of the individual Standards will also be available at www.qualityaustria.com. A three-year transition period is intended for the transition from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001.
